Wolfsburg had a massive chance to open the scoring early on when Mohamed Amoura stole the ball from goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. However, Patrick Wimmer, with an easy tap-in in front of him, slipped, allowing Zetterer to deal with the danger and keep the game at 0-0.
Frankfurt would punish Wimmer and Wolfsburg for the wasted chances, with goals from Oscar Højlund and Arnaud Kalimuendo giving Riera's side a 2-1 win at the Volkswagen Arena. Wolfsburg are still chasing their first win since January.
Wolfsburg looked lively from the start, and only eleven minutes had passed when Wimmer was gifted his massive chance. Zetterer, starting because of an injury to Kauã Santos, dawdled on the ball, allowing Amoura to slide in and dispossess the goalkeeper. The Austrian was unable to stay on his feet, though, and the chance passed.
Arnaud Kalimuendo almost made Wolfsburg pay for the missed chance immediately, as Frankfurt quickly countered. Kamil Grabara was alert, though, and got down quickly to stop the Frenchman's shot.
Wimmer continued to look lively, despite his slip, but Wolfsburg just lacked that killer instinct in the final third.
Then, in the 21st minute, the deadlock was broken by Frankfurt out of nowhere. Ayoube Amaimouni found his way to the edge of the box and slid the ball over to Oscar Højlund, whose curling shot deflected off the post and in to make it 1-0.
Eleven minutes later, Frankfurt doubled their lead. A well-taken low free-kick found Jonathan Burkardt's run, and while Grabara saved the initial shot, there was nothing he could do about the rebound. Kalimuendo tucked in from close range to make it 2-0.
It almost went from bad to worse for Wolfsburg, as Højlund's fantastic low pass found Amaimouni in space. The 21-year-old seemed to have scored to make it 3-0, but he was narrowly offside, and the goal was called back.
Within minutes, there would be two massive misses. First, Zetterer turned the ball over in a dangerous area again, but this time Wimmer slowed play down and tried to find Amoura, allowing Arthur Theate to clear the danger.
Moments later, Frankfurt were on the attack, and a cross found Burkardt unmarked on the back post. Somehow, Burkardt failed to get a shot off, as the ball hit him awkwardly, and the chance was wasted. The score remained 2-0 heading into the break.
Wolfsburg got off to a quick start again in the second half. Lovro Majer, subbed on for Jesper Lindstrøm at the half, immediately looked a threat as he headed just over the bar. Shortly after, his free-kick was pushed onto the bar by Zetterer as Wolfsburg pushed forward.
Majer continued to trouble Frankfurt's defense, finding Aaron Zehnter with a brilliant through-ball. Zehnter's chipped shot went just wide.
Wolfsburg peppered the Frankfurt goal with shots in the second half, but despite dominating possession and creating better chances, they failed to cause too much trouble for Zetterer. Despite recording 19 shots in the second half, only four were on target.
However, there was a small consolation for Wolfsburg. In the 97th minute, Adam Daghim found Dženan Pejčinović in the box, and Pejčinović headed the ball between Zetterer's legs to make it 2-1. The whistle blew only seconds later, confirming another Wolfsburg loss.
Eintracht Frankfurt now sit seventh in the Bundesliga, nine points behind TSG Hoffenheim. Die Adler return to Deutsche Bank Park on Saturday to face off against RB Leipzig.
Wolfsburg are now 17th and only two points ahead of last-placed FC Heidenheim, and four points behind St. Pauli, who play FC Bayern Munich later today. Wolfsburg are away against Union Berlin next Saturday, with time rapidly running out to preserve their top-flight status.
