There were several sides in action in the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday evening.

Here’s what happened.

Brosnan seals tie for Everton with shootout heroics

Scorers: Stokes 5′; Bissell 50′

Newcastle battled to a 1-1 draw with WSL side Everton in normal time, but eventually lost out on penalties.

Former Manchester City left-back Stokes opened her account for new club Newcastle after just five minutes against the WSL side.

Into the second half and Everton had their equaliser when substitute Clare Wheeler played in Toni Payne from the right-hand side,  who fired a cross across goal that hit Emma Bissell and crept in.

Penalties followed and Courtney Brosnan made three top level saves to hand the win to the Toffees.

Manchester United take down Liverpool

Scorers: Malard 9′, Williams 67′

Manchester United delivered a 2-0 win over WSL rivals Liverpool with veteran Rachel Williams on target.

The home side drew first blood when Melvine Malard fired home through a crowded penalty area.

Veteran Rachel Williams doubled the advantage in the second half with a calm finish from inside the box.

West Ham demolish Portsmouth

Scorers: Piubel 13′, Harries 43′, 52′, Asseyi 46, 49′ Ueki 90+3′; Hornby (PEN) 25′

West Ham showed their dominance with a 5-1 win over Championship side Portsmouth.

The Hammers opened the scoring when Seraina Piubel made a run into the box and slotted the finish into the bottom corner, but were soon pegged back when Portsmouth were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Megan Hornby.

Just before half-time, the home side regained the lead when Emma Harries delivered a confident finish by chipping goalkeeper Eve Annets.

West Ham brought on Viviane Asseyi at the start of the second half and that decision paid off in some style when the forward scored twice in three minutes within just four minutes of her introduction.

Harries then had her brace as the Hammers flexed their muscles, heading her effort beyond Annets.

The sixth was added in stoppage time by Riko Ueki, who followed up on her goal in WSL action from the weekend.

Bristol City defeat Leicester in penalty shoot-out drama

Scorers: Chossenotte 67′; Lloyd-Smith 80′

Leicester were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City, in normal time and it was the Championship side who took the bonus point through a penalty shoot-out.

It took for substitute Shana Chossenotte to come on for the Foxes to unlock the Bristol City defence, the 19-year-old firing home from a tight angle.

The away side found an equaliser with ten minutes to go through summer signing Lexi Lloyd-Smith, who turned in Abi Harrison’s cross.

Bristol City’s Jackie Burns made three saves in the shoot-out to deny Leicester.

Kirby on target as Brighton register straightforward win over Birmingham

Scorers: Bergsvand 71′, Symonds 74′, Kirby 86′

A strong second half display from Brighton saw off Birmingham by a 3-0 scoreline.

Brighton sparked into life with 20 minutes remaining, scoring first through Guro Bergsvand and the second a stunning strike from Maisie Symonds just three minutes later.

The third was netted by former Chelsea forward Fran Kirby, as Brighton put the tie out of sight.

Aston Villa late show seals win over Crystal Palace

Scorers: Hanson 80′, Robinson 90+2

Aston Villa had a straightforward evening with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace

After a long stretch of the game with no goals, Scotland international Kirsty Hanson was the one to break the deadlock, showing her strength to win the ball before rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.

Tottenham overcome brave Charlton with late strike

Scorers: Bühler 8′, Naz 86; Bradley 45′

Charlton put up a good fight against Tottenham but ultimately succumbed to a late winner from the WSL side.

Tottenham took the lead early at the valley when a brilliant free-kick delivery to the far post from Matilda Vinberg allowed Luana Bühler to nod home the opener.

Yet Charlton grew into the game and after Tottenham had survived a huge let-off just minutes before, the home side had their equaliser.

Addicks forward Ellie Brazil did the hard work, tearing down the right wing and beating her marker and delivering the cross for Katie Bradley to finish.

The WSL side eventually fought back through Jess Naz, who smashed home emphatically to deliver the late winner for Tottenham.

The Women’s League Cup is a group stage format, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout rounds following its conclusion in December.
