Wolves Women missed out on the Northern Premier title on the final day, but still have a promotion shot via a play-off. As reported by ExpressAndStar.com, they will face Southern Division Plymouth for a place in WSL2.

Beth Merrick, Amber Hughes and Amy Sims scored in a 3-0 win at Halifax, yet Burnley’s 3-0 victory over Stoke sealed top spot by a point. Wolves would have gone up had they taken the title.

Head coach Dan McNamara hailed a 61-point return and 20 wins from 22, offered congratulations to Burnley, and said this was the hardest one to take.

He added the squad are not downbeat, will train for another week, and see the play-off as a huge opportunity they are excited for.

The tie is at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium on bank holiday Monday, 4 May, with a 1pm kick-off. Wolves are running subsidised coach travel at £10 per person.

Elsewhere, Albion drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough, while Sporting Khalsa ended bottom after a 6-0 defeat at Loughborough Lightning.

In WSL2, promotion-chasing Birmingham City lost 3-0 at home to Ipswich Town, who struck three times in the opening 15 minutes in Blues’ final home match.

In Division One Midlands, Kidderminster Harriers won 2-1 at Sutton Coldfield to finish ninth, while relegated Stourbridge were beaten 7-0 at champions Peterborough United to end 11th, five points short of safety.
