Africa’s nine qualified teams learn their paths: DR Congo still eye a place

The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held on Friday 5 December in Washington, D.C, produced historic and highly compelling set of group match ups for Africa’s nine representatives.
The ceremony, staged at the Kennedy Center in the presence of US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney & Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed the full tournament pathway for the first ever 48 team World Cup.
Africa will have nine team confirmed at the finals, with possible tenth if DR Congo advance through the intercontinental playoff in March.
The Atlas Lions, Africa’s top ranked side and semi finalists in 2022 headline Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
Their opening clash against Brazil is immediately one of the most anticipated group games of the tournament.
Back at the World Cup for the first time since 2010, South Africa headline Group A which includes Mexico, South Korea & the European playoff winner (from Denmark / North Macedonia / Czechia / Ireland).
The opening match of the World Cup will be Mexico vs South Africa on 11 June in Mexico City.. a rerun of the 2010 curtain raiser.
With Germany favourites, the Ivorians view the second qualifying spot as fully achievable.
Tunisia were drawn into Group F with Netherlands, Japan & the European playoff winner (Ukraine / Sweden / Poland / Albania).
Egypt meanwhile headline Group G alongside Belgium, Iran & New Zealand giving the Pharaohs strong shot at reaching the Round of 32.
Newcomers Cape Verde face Spain, Uruguay & Saudi Arabia in Group H.. a demanding debut for the island nation.
Algeria hit one of the tournament’s toughest draws in Group J meeting Argentina, Austria and Jordan.
In Group I, Senegal meet France reviving memories of their iconic 2002 opener. The group also includes Norway and the winner of the South America–Asia playoff.
Group L sees Ghana drawn against England, Croatia and Panama. A demanding route but one Ghana’s pedigree equips them for.
A tenth African nation remains possible. DR Congo must beat Jamaica and then Iraq in March’s intercontinental playoff to take one of the final two global berth.
