Egypt were knocked out by Argentina in the last 16. According to Superdeporte, head coach Hossam Hassan railed at refereeing and VAR after the defeat.
Egypt led 2-0 with fewer than 15 minutes remaining. A brilliant Leo Messi and several contentious calls punctuated a comeback, sealed by an Enzo Fernández winner.
Hassan argued the decisive goal followed a possible foul on Salah and said there was no VAR review, which he considered deeply unfair.
Egypt also pointed to an earlier VAR intervention that ruled out a Mostafa Ziko strike after a fine run by Haissem Hassan, due to an accidental stamp by Attia on Lisandro Martínez.
The manager maintained Egypt had been the better side, and speculated there might be a desire to keep the world champions and Messi in for marketing reasons. He added that, in their post-match exchange, he felt François Letexier might have been hiding something.
Ziko’s anger was stronger, as he called it a clear injustice, accused the referee of wasting a nation’s effort and alleged the tournament was fixed from the start. He also questioned numerous second-half decisions.
The president of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abo Rida, has lodged an official complaint against Letexier and his assistants.
