An attack on Iran and the subsequent response, a little over three months before World Cup 2026, has left FIFA weighing scenarios from Iran’s withdrawal to bolstered security if the team plays on.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, federation president Mehdi Taj signalled on Sunday that a pull-out is possible. He said it was unlikely they could look forward to the tournament after what had happened and referred to a US attack, adding that sporting officials should decide.

The 2026 tournament regulations set out withdrawal terms in article 6. Announcing more than 30 days before the 11 June kick-off would draw a minimum fine of 250,000 Swiss francs, while renouncing inside 30 days carries at least 500,000. The federation would also have to repay FIFA preparation and competition funds, including 1.5 million dollars for preparation and 10.5 million for participation.

Further disciplinary measures could include exclusion from a future FIFA competition. Rule 6.7 states FIFA will decide at its discretion, including replacing the team.

If the Asian allocation of 8.5 places is maintained, Iraq are best placed, having earned an intercontinental play-off on 31 March against the winner of Bolivia v Surinam. In that case, the United Arab Emirates could enter that play-off, after losing to Iraq in Asia.

Iran have chosen Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex as their base. In Group G, Amir Ghalenoei’s side are scheduled to play New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June, Belgium there six days later, then Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.
