World Cup: Luka Modric becomes third player to reach 200 caps

On Tuesday, Luka Modric joined the select group of players with at least 200 caps, having started and captained Croatia against Panama on matchday two of the 2026 World Cup group stage. The AC Milan midfielder is 40.
Before Modric, only two had reached 200 international appearances, Cristiano Ronaldo on 230 and Lionel Messi on 201. According to Opta, he brought up 200 in his 21st World Cup match, and since his 2006 debut only Ronaldo, 23, and Messi, 27, have played more at the finals.
Croatia edged Panama 1-0. After the final whistle, Modric was presented with a commemorative shirt by Croatian federation president Marijan Kustic.
He then posed with his team-mates and staff, who wore T-shirts bearing his image.
They carried him aloft in celebration.
