The Rs have enjoyed a competitive 2025/26 campaign thus far, which seems them currently sat 11th in the Championship after 26 matches, just three points shy of the play-offs.

Inconsistency has cost Rangers being even higher up the table, with Julien Stephan’s side looking a match for most sides in the division when at their best.

QPR have won 11 matches thus far, a total bettered by six sides, but have only picked up five draws, which is a tally worsened by just three teams. This means that the West London outfit have been defeated too many times to creep further towards automatic promotion, something they will desperately look to address in the winter transfer window.

There has been good news for Queens Park Rangers so far this month, with the news emerging that they have agreed to bring Southampton defender Ronnie Edwards back to the club on a permanent basis.

However, another recent update may leave the Loftus Road faithful feeling slightly less inspired.

Saint-Étienne pursue deal for Jonathan Varane

One of QPR’s stronger operators this term has been Varane, often dictating play from midfield in a holding role.

During the summer, French side Saint-Étienne tried to sign the 24-year-old, who moved to Loftus Road in 2024, but their approaches were rejected.

According to West London Sport, the Ligue 2 outfit are now interested in a transfer once again, in the form of a loan deal until the end of the current season, before making the move permanent for £5.2m.

Other European clubs are also believed to be keen on acquiring Varane’s services and could make their own offers.

The midfielder has a contract at Loftus Road until 2030, having signed an extension to his initial deal in May 2025.

QPR won’t want to lose Jonathan Varane

The 2025/26 Championship campaign has been tightly contested, with not much separating those teams in the top six and bottom half.

Therefore, gaining any slight advantage possible in January could have massive consequences. On the other hand, losing players may also create a similarly negative effect.

Although Saint-Étienne’s permanent offer presents a hefty transfer fee, it may not be worth causing a massive disturbance to QPR’s performances on the pitch.

If Rangers have a chance of creeping into the play-offs and battling it out for a spot in the Premier League, they must put all efforts towards that goal and reject offers for Varane.
