According to Sky Sports News, Wrexham are weighing up a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with Millwall and Wolves also interested. The report adds Sunderland’s asking price is around £8m to £10m, which Wrexham hope can be negotiated.
Patterson has two years left on his contract and is currently Sunderland’s third-choice goalkeeper. The valuation may be challenging for most second-tier clubs, though he could depart this summer.
The 26-year-old had been key in Sunderland’s promotion from the Championship last year, then lost the number one spot under Regis Le Bris to Robin Roefs after the latter arrived from NEC Nijmegen.
Starved of minutes on Wearside, he joined Millwall on loan in January, linking up with former Sunderland boss Alex Neil. He quickly became first choice and helped Millwall reach the Championship play-off semi-finals, where they lost to Hull City.
Competition for places at Sunderland is fierce. Melker Ellborg is understood to be content as number two, while Patterson is not thought to be in the same position. The academy graduate is keen to play regularly at this stage of his career.
