Coventry City beat Middlesbrough 3-1 on Monday night in Coventry to rise from second to first in the Championship.
Haji Wright clipped the post early on, then opened the scoring in the 21st minute after Jack Rudoni teed him up from the centre of the box. After the restart, Carl Rushworth's long pass sent Wright clear to double the lead (55.).
Boro hit back when Riley McGree rifled into the top right (67.). Moments later, a Matt Targett handball gave Coventry City a penalty, and Wright converted from the spot to complete his treble (71.). Wright is now on 13 league goals, second in Championship scoring.
Rushworth also made key stops as Boro pressed, notably denying Hayden Hackney from close range. Coventry City remained compact and cleared their lines under pressure.
Coventry City registered nine attempts, four on target, from 28.5% possession. Boro dominated the ball at 71.5% and tallied 17 attempts, with four on target.
Next, Coventry City visit West Bromwich Albion. Boro host Oxford United.
