Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive start to the Women’s Super League season continued as they held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw in the North London Derby.

In front of a club record 6,788 at Brisbane Road, Spurs hosted the first NLD of the season. The rivals remain level on points in the WSL table, with Arsenal just ahead on goal difference.

Despite London bragging rights on offer, both sides struggled to properly assert themselves on the game.

Tottenham send Arsenal home goalless

Spurs created the better of the early chances as Eveliina Summanen fired a seventh minute free-kick straight at Daphne van Domselaar.

Martin Ho’s side nearly took the lead in the 19th minute. A pinpoint cross from Jess Naz found Matilda Vinberg in space in the box. However, she couldn’t connect and the chance was gone.

Chances then started to come for Arsenal. Stina Blackstenius shot wide and was then denied well by Lize Kop at the near post.

A Beth Mead free-kick that flew straight into the wall in first half injury time was the only other chance of note for either side.

Gunners boss Renée Slegers called on Olivia Smith at the break as she looked to inject some urgency into the game. Smith was quickly into the action and remained a threat all afternoon. She had a great chance on the hour, but Kop stood tall to make the save.

Arsenal grabbed something of a foothold on the game. But in truth, Spurs were never unduly worried defensively as the onslaught failed to materialise.

Martha Thomas sliced an injury time chance wide as a draw left Arsenal eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City to round off a frustrating week.

Renée Slegers says it’s ‘hard at the moment’ for Arsenal

Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager Renée Slegers admitted that ‘it’s hard at the moment, we can’t deny it’. However, she countered that by saying that the game against Chelsea along with their first half against Bayern Munich showed ‘there’s a lot of positives’.

Speaking after the final whistle, Spurs boss Ho described the result as ‘a good response from the London City game from a defensive perspective’.

Tottenham finish the weekend level on points with Arsenal in fifth place.

Up next for Spurs is an away trip to Bristol City next Sunday in the Subway League Cup. Meanwhile, Arsenal will look to get their stuttering Champions League campaign back on track at home to Real Madrid on Wednesday.
