Xabi Alonso backs ‘special’ Liverpool star to come good ahead of UCL clash | OneFootball

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has this week moved to throw his backing behind under-fire Liverpool star Florian Wirtz.

This of course comes amid what has been a difficult start to life for the German in the Premier League.

Wirtz has come in for heavy criticism since making the move to Anfield over the summer, in a record-breaking transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

All told, the 22-year-old has managed just a pair of goal contributions (in the same game) across 14 appearances in Liverpool colours.

One individual confident that Wirtz will soon find his footing on Merseyside, though, is the aforementioned Xabi Alonso.

Speaking to the media ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, Alonso was drawn on his former midfield standout’s recent form.

And the Spanish tactician did not hesitate in throwing his full backing behind Wirtz:

“For sure he will be a success. I have no doubt. It is a big change for him to come to LFC after so many years in Germany, his whole life. He needs to adapt but he is a special player, the quality, the personality, competitive so when he makes that switch, I have no doubt with Flo, he is so special and one of the reasons I am here is because of Flo, so I am grateful to him. Hopefully he starts showing his class.”
