Reds legend endures miserable return to Anfield in the Champions League
Xabi Alonso believes it’s “looking good” for former club Liverpool this season.
The Bayer Leverkusen boss was strongly tipped to replace Jurgen Klopp earlier this year but decided to stay with the German side, who he ultimately led to a stunning domestic double.
Alonso, however, saw his Leverkusen team dismantled 4-0 in a second-half masterclass at Anfield, with Arne Slot’s side continuing their perfect record in the Champions League this season.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring for the Reds with a beautiful chip for the first of his three goals on Tuesday before Cody Gakpo nodded in a quick-fire second.
The Colombian international would add two more to his tally on the night to continue a remarkable start to the season for Slot’s side.
Liverpool sit top of the pile in both the Premier League and the Champions League and Alonso believes they are on course for a brilliant season.
“It's early to tell but I can see that Liverpool have a very good balance, a very complete team,” he told Amazon Prime.
“They work the 11 players and they have the power to hold a clean sheet which is important in the Champions League. In the Premier League, let's see. It's early to tell but it's looking good."
