Xabi Alonso declined to comment on Granit Xhaka after Chelsea’s failed attempt to sign the Sunderland captain.
According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea explored a move for the Switzerland international. Xhaka was understood to have been attracted by the chance to reunite with Alonso after their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.
Sunderland’s stance stayed firm throughout. The Black Cats insisted their captain was not for sale and rejected approaches. They signed him from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17million and view him as central to Régis Le Bris’ squad before a return to European competition.
Xhaka initially listened to the opportunity, then reaffirmed his commitment after talks with the club. The chance to captain in Europe, alongside Sunderland’s longer-term ambitions, influenced his decision to stay at the Stadium of Light.
Alonso said: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” Sunderland now consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
