Xabi Alonso was considered by Olympique de Marseille but did not pursue the post. RMC Sport reports this followed information shared at a Tuesday meeting between owner Frank McCourt and supporter representatives.
He was not convinced by the conditions. Ongoing turbulence at the club, uncertainty over the presidency, a reduced sporting role for Pablo Longoria and the prospect of a short-term mandate are understood to have deterred him.
OM have now moved towards Habib Beye, seen as a pragmatic option, with his appointment awaiting LFP validation.
That search follows Roberto De Zerbi’s exit a week ago, after a 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique and mounting inconsistency.
Sporting director Medhi Benatia tendered his resignation the same day De Zerbi left. After he announced his departure yesterday, McCourt brought him back with increased football responsibilities, while president Pablo Longoria was demoted to institutional duties.
