After a series of poor performances, Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid team has delivered under pressure to close out 2025 with three consecutive victories in all competitions.

Their most recent win came against Sevilla, which was an important result for Xabi Alonso given that a third consecutive defeat at home could have led to his ouster.

Despite the results, however, Real Madrid are still trailing rivals Barcelona by four points heading into the new season.

Xabi Alonso’s job remains unsafe

A recent report from The Athletic now points out that Xabi Alonso’s job at Real Madrid remains unsafe despite three successive wins.

In fact, Alonso’s job will not be safe until Real Madrid start to show a clear improvement in performances. That means the team has to improve as a whole; just bringing positive results won’t matter.

That is largely because the issue around Alonso has not been only results. The board is concerned about how the dressing room has reacted around him.

Although things have improved considerably since, with the coach now enjoying the backing of the dressing room, this has come at a cost.

Alonso has had to maintain a good relationship with the top players, including Vinicius Jr. and Federico Valverde, while ceding power to the dressing room.

The former Leverkusen coach has also had to mellow down significantly with regard to his tactical approach and rotation policy and become more accommodating towards Vinicius Jr.

But whether that will translate into results remains to be seen. Many believe the upcoming Spanish Super Cup could be the great decider, with the top management expecting Los Blancos to win the lucrative tournament in Saudi Arabia.
