After a relatively rough 2025, Xabi Alonso would have hoped for the new year to start well for Real Madrid, especially with trophies being on the line more evidently from here on.

2026, however, has started off in the worst possible way as the team have been hit with yet another crucial injury blow – this time of Kylian Mbappe who has been the team’s best player so far this season.

The Frenchman has suffered a blow to his knee and is expected to be out for three weeks, leaving Alonso without the one positive spark the team had last year.

The manager’s disbelief

Mbappe’s absence comes at the worst possible time for Real Madrid, especially with the Spanish Super Cup coming up and Alonso’s job still on the line.

Alonso, needless to say, will be frustrated to have the star goalscorer injured at such a crucial point, and Defensa Central reveal what his reaction was at the moment he learnt of Mbappe’s injury.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” Alonso reportedly said in disbelief at the development.

As it stands, Mbappe is certainly ruled out for Real Madrid’s first game of 2026 and is tentatively set to miss the Supercopa as well.

He is, however, pushing hard to return during the tournament in Saudi Arabia and has an outside chance of returning in time.

Alonso, for his part, will have to look for solutions to a situation that is further complicated by Endrick’s recent departure. Gonzalo Garcia is an option that stands out, but only time will tell what Alonso has in mind.

So far this season, Mbappe has scored more than half of Real Madrid’s goals across all competitions and has single-handedly carried the attack. It remains to be seen who steps up with the goalscoring in his absence.
