Yoane Wissa has become the latest name to walk through the doors at St James’ Park, completing his long-desired move from Brentford to Newcastle on deadline day. For the Congolese forward, the transfer is more than a change of club – it is a chance to test himself in the Champions League, something he has openly yearned for.
“I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League,” Wissa declared upon signing. “I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Brentford had little appetite to part with Wissa. Already stripped of Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard earlier in the window, they initially rebuffed two Newcastle approaches, including a £40 million bid. Yet the inevitability of top-level ambition won out. An offer climbing towards £55m forced their hand, and Wissa’s journey north was set in motion.
Eddie Howe’s squad continues to evolve, with Wissa joining Nick Woltemade – a record signing from Stuttgart – as part of a striking overhaul. The departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, in a British transfer record deal, had left a gap to fill. Wissa’s versatility and ability to stretch defences provide Newcastle with exactly the sort of attacking edge required for both domestic battles and European nights.
He is the fifth major signing of the summer window, alongside Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale. It is a collection of arrivals that speaks less of consolidation and more of a club determined to push its ceiling higher.
At 29, Wissa arrives at Newcastle at the peak of his powers. His time at Brentford was marked by dynamism, clever movement and an instinct for goals in pressure moments. Newcastle have not only signed a forward but also a player with a proven Premier League record – the kind of guarantee that money alone rarely secures.
For Wissa, this is a leap into the elite. For Newcastle, it is another calculated step in their attempt to join it.
