Young Boys Berne edged Lille 1-0 in the Europa League, Olivier Giroud subdued as the visitors lacked threat.

Ayyoub Bouaddi, sent off again after his red against Le Havre in late November, was dismissed on 32 minutes for hauling down former team-mate Alan Virginius, giving the hosts a penalty. Özer, the Türkiye goalkeeper, dived right to keep out Chris Bédia’s effort, then blocked Virginius on the rebound on 35 minutes.

Lille held on until Darian Males stole in to decide it, meeting a Virginius cross on 61 minutes with the defence caught out. Young Boys finished with 10 men after Tanguy Zoukrou, on since 84 minutes, received two quick bookings on 90 and 90+2.

Virginius tormented his old club and earned 7/10, winning the spot-kick and supplying the winner before limping off for Rhodri Smith on 76 minutes. Bédia struggled at 3/10, winning only two of 11 duels.

Özer also rated 7/10 for his sixth saved penalty from seven faced this season and a string of alert interventions. Captain Benjamin André took 6/10 after winning eight of nine duels and driving attacks.

In contrast, Lille’s attack misfired. Ngal'ayel Mukau and Félix Correia both took 3/10 and were replaced on 68 minutes by Osame Sahraoui and Ethan Mbappé, while Giroud, also 3/10, started by Bruno Genesio on Berne’s synthetic surface, missed a ninth-minute chance, took a knock to his left ankle on 15 minutes and was withdrawn for Soriba Diaoune on 68, his back-heel on 55 lacking power.
