Yuri Alberto’s stoppage-time winner sparked an unusual celebration as the Corinthians striker had his shorts ripped off by team-mates at Benitão in Rio Claro on Sunday after sealing victory over Velo Clube.
After sprinting towards the stands to celebrate with supporters, the forward ended up in just his underwear amid the jubilant scenes.
"Do not remind me of that, I was in such ecstasy with the fans. Out of nowhere I looked back, Bidu and André were pulling my shorts off. It was a special moment with the fans. I apologise for the inconvenience. This is so Corinthians," he joked. He was speaking to Record.
The result lifts Corinthians to eight points in the state championship, up to fourth and inside the quarter-final qualification places. It also eases the prospect of a crisis on the eve of the Supercopa Rei against Flamengo in Brasília.
"Since the end of the match against Santos, we knew today’s win would be very important for us. An away victory. Congratulations to the city for the atmosphere. To come on and score again after the last game, to finally break the drought, is wonderful. I am grateful to God for being able to provide this win," the No 9 said.
Corinthians are back in action on Wednesday at Vila Belmiro against Bahia in the first round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, then travel to Brasília to face Flamengo in the Supercopa Rei on Sunday, one February.
