Yuri Alberto leads the line: recent Corinthians number 9s

Since August 2022, forward Yuri Alberto has been the owner of the traditional number 9 jersey for Corinthians. Unlike what happened in other seasons, in the year the player arrived, the number had already been used by another athlete. Róger Guedes had stopped wearing the number 123 and started playing with the traditional numbering.

Yuri Alberto joined the club in mid-July 2022, when the number still belonged to Róger Guedes. As a result, he was introduced with the number 7 jersey, which belonged to Luan. After the departure of attacking midfielder Willian, there was a reallocation of the numbering, with Guedes switching to number 10 and leaving the number 9 for the player who came from Zenit.

Since Paolo Guerrero, who left the club in the first half of 2015 and was the scorer of the goal that secured the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2012, Corinthians experienced a long period without great players wearing the center forward jersey. Right after the Peruvian's departure, Vagner Love wore it on some occasions but was marked as the team's top scorer in the 2015 Brasileirão with the number 99 jersey.

In 2016, Timão spent the entire season with issues in the position. The year began with André wearing the number 9, but the player left the club halfway through the season. Consequently, the numbering was taken over by Gustavo, known as Gustagol, who also did not perform as expected.

In the following season, the top scorer for Corinthians was Jô, who wore the number 7 and ended up being the top scorer of the Brazilian Championship, in addition to winning the competition title and the player of the tournament award. The number 9 was Cleiton, who played few matches and left the team at the end of the year.

With Jô's departure, the People's Team faced issues again in the center forward position. In 2018, Roger and Jonathas were signed for the position, but only the former wore the number 9, not performing as expected and terminating his contract with the club at the beginning of the following year.

Vagner Love returned to the club in 2019 and, this time, wore the number 9 throughout his tenure. He scored the goal that secured the state championship title for Corinthians that year and stayed with the team until early 2020, leaving after an early elimination in the Libertadores.

Since then, Timão had been without a “number 9” in the squad until Róger Guedes took over the numbering. Currently, the number belongs to Yuri Alberto, who has already scored 76 goals wearing it. Two of those goals, in fact, were in the finals of the Paulistão and the Copa do Brasil, securing the black-and-white titles in 2025.
