Zaragoza's captain bets on a revival

Francho Serrano has brought clarity to both his personal future and that of Real Zaragoza by agreeing a contract renewal through to 2030, a decision the midfielder describes as both “an obvious” step and a personal point of pride. After a protracted and sometimes uncomfortable renewal process, the club’s captain is settled and determined to lead as Zaragoza attempt to put consecutive seasons of struggle behind them.

The 23-year-old conveyed his relief and happiness in a press conference following Zaragoza’s final home match of the season. “I’m very happy—this is what I wanted. It’s an honour to keep wearing these colours. If one day what we all want actually happens, I could never forgive myself for not being here,” Francho said, alluding to the club’s long-term ambition of returning to the top flight.

The renewal process was not always straightforward. It began early in the campaign with sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero pushing for Francho to extend, but initial offers “fell short.” Francho noted that as he gained greater importance in the team—particularly after returning from injury—his position in negotiations strengthened. A lengthy silence followed the club’s change of manager and Cordero’s exit, which Francho admitted was “uncomfortable and tough.” However, a pivotal call from director Fernando López broke the deadlock: “After that call, things moved very quickly. Neither side wanted to force the situation while we were fighting for survival, but it was worth it—I’m thrilled to continue at the club I love.”

As Zaragoza now look ahead, Francho is candid about the challenges. He makes no attempt to gloss over the recent past, admitting that “we’ve spent the last two seasons fighting relegation, and the club’s reality now is not what any of us expected.” Defensively, he identified a lack of solidity as the key reason for a disappointing campaign, despite improved performances after Gabi Fernández took charge for the run-in. “With Gabi, we’ve managed to tighten up. In Segunda, any detail can decide a match, often at set pieces. We need both players who can help us score and collective defensive strength.”

Looking forward, Francho aligns with Gabi’s call for a reset, suggesting that Zaragoza’s recent travails should provide clear lessons. “It’s time to wipe the slate clean and build together, but slowly. Getting carried away too early with excitement can lead to setbacks.” He emphasised that the badge and the supporters remain above all. “The club is bigger than any individual, and our fans have every right to be frustrated. When things go badly, Zaragoza is a tough place to be, but the support is always there. We need to stay united.”

Francho acknowledged a desire for Gabi Fernández to stay on, describing the coach as a “reference point” whose commitment has been vital in a difficult year. He also accepted the “flagbearer” role within the group, saying, “That’s part of why I’ve stayed. I believe I’m capable of leading this new project and doing whatever I can to help Zaragoza rise again.”
