Former Brazil full-back Zé Maria has thrown his support behind Vasco ahead of Sunday’s Copa do Brasil final against Corinthians at the Maracanã, kick-off 18:00. Vasco have not lifted the trophy since 2011.

The player said in a post that he wished the Gigante da Colina luck and hoped a long-awaited victory would arrive for the board, coaching staff and the club’s supporters.

Zé Maria was part of Vasco’s 1999 squad, winning the Rio-São Paulo Tournament and the Taça Rio. His spell was brief but impactful.

He later shone in Europe, notably with Internazionale, lifting Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. He also represented Portuguesa, Flamengo, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro, plus Parma, Perugia and Levante.

For Brazil, he earned 25 caps between 1996 and 2001, winning the Copa América and Confederations Cup, and bronze at the Atlanta Olympics.
