It was another shocking performance by one Chelsea player in the Carabao Cup last night after he failed to stake a claim.

It was an opportunity for Enzo Maresca’s second string team and fringe players to stake a claim to get more minutes in his preferred starting Xl last night, but they pretty much all failed at this test – some more than others.

EXCLUSIVE! The internal reactions to Enzo Maresca’s comments and what to expect going forward!!

Chelsea themselves struggled and fumbled to the win as well, but needed two late goals from two ‘first team’ subs to get the win in the end and save the red faces.

And shockingly, Maresca says he ‘fell in love’ with his second string players last night after the 3-1 win against Cardiff.

Personally, I thought there was some absolutely abysmal performances on display last night, and Jamie Gittens was one of them.

Gittens called woeful

Give Me Sport, who titled their article ‘Chelsea Dud Was ‘Woeful’ vs Cardiff – He’s Been a Monumental Waste of Money’, have gone in on Gittens poor performance last night.

They say that Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones, reporting at half-time, described how both the winger and Facundo Buonanotte had squandered opportunities in attack, labelling them “woeful.”

“Facundo Buonanotte and Jamie Gittens must be in danger of getting hooked at the break,” he wrote. “Both have found lots of pockets of space but have been utterly wasteful with the ball. Between them they have contested 14 duels and lost them all.

“They have both lost possession 10 times each too – the joint-most of any Chelsea players. Woeful.”

The stats are bad

Gittens didn’t manage to complete either of his two dribbles over the course of a 66-minute cameo. And while he did manage to play one key pass in the game, he also lost possession of the ball 10 times, which led to play breaking down as Chelsea struggled to get out of first gear.

Gittens’ Statistics from Cardiff 1-3 Chelsea

Minutes – 66

Touches – 41

Key Passes -1

Passing Accuracy -21/25 (84%)
