It’s hard to know where to begin in order to solve Liverpool’s problems at present.

There are seemingly issues all over the field - and in the depth of the squad - as borne out by six losses in their last seven matches.

Of course the Premier League champions are missing several players through injury - including Alisson Becker, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Alexander Isak.

But even when most of those have been fit and available over the last few weeks, Arne Slot’s side haven’t been able to garner positive results.

Liverpool have got a centre-back crisis

Perhaps the best place to start is a transfer priority that Richard Hughes tried to sort out on deadline day. Having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen - banking around £30m - the Anfield club required a new, senior central defender.

But an attempt to prise Marc Guehi out of Crystal Palace came to nothing and Liverpool faced the season with only Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Leoni.

Matters were made all the worse by Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury on debut - leaving Slot with only three central defenders.

As evidenced against Crystal Palace midweek - quality and depth in the heart of defence is a glaring issue right now and one Liverpool need to solve soon.

Liverpool want €100m Van de Ven

It’s now been suggested that Hughes is going to have to pay €100m to sign a proper first-choice centre-back - with Konate’s exit on a free now also looming over the club’s heads.

Micky van de Ven, 24, has been in sensational form for Tottenham since signing from Wolfsburg in 2023.

The Dutchman - renowned for his pace - has worn the captain’s armband in the last two matches for Thomas Frank’s side and has scored FIVE times already this term.

That underlines the Netherlands’ international’s set-piece prowess - certainly something Liverpool will be seeking to rectify if Konate leaves for free.

Arne Slot tried to sign Van de Ven TWICE

Van de Ven - under contract with Spurs until 2029 - is being looked at by Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich - according to a new report in Fichajes.

“The 24-year-old Dutch defender has been valued at around €100 million,” a report reads.

“His physique, speed, and defensive awareness have attracted the attention of clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich.”

The report also mentions that Spurs will seek to ward off interest in their star defender by offering him a contract extension and no doubt a pay rise.

Liverpool for their part need to renew their defence and fast. Not only is Konate out of contract in 2026, Gomez and Van Dijk are due to leave the club a year later.

Arne Slot is a big fan of Van de Ven - with the player previously admitting that the Liverpool head coach tried to sign him for AZ and again for Feyenoord.

Maybe he will finally get his chance to shine under Slot - and solve a massive problem for the Reds.
