Wolves were relegated from the Premier League on Monday 20 April, ending an eight-year stay. The Old Gold now face the Championship and a difficult rebuild.

According to Molineux.news, misfiring recruitment and the sale of game-changers top the causes. Not one 2025 summer signing had Premier League experience, while Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Pablo Sarabia, Nelson Semedo and even Goncalo Guedes departed without proven replacements.

Vitor Pereira received a new contract on 17 September, then was sacked in early November after a 3-0 defeat to Fulham, with two points from 10 games. He might have gone a month earlier after a 3-1 home loss to Leeds United, and he had doubts about continuing after the summer window.

A chronic lack of bite left Wolves on 24 goals from 33 league matches. They failed to score in 16 league games, now 17 after Leeds, matching the previous two seasons combined. Established players underperformed, with Jorgen Strand Larsen berated during the Manchester United game, and Joao Gomes and Andre well short of their best.

The atmosphere sagged as results dipped, and Molineux was no fortress. Only 12 home points have arrived so far and there has been no away win all season. Leadership was scant, with captain Toti Gomes rarely on the pitch and the armband rotating to Matt Doherty, Joao Gomes and Jose Sa.

Intensity often waned before Rob Edwards raised fitness levels. He inherited a mess, improved culture, but results and some tactical calls fell short.

Supporters still tried to back the side, yet protests against Fosun grew, including outside Molineux in December against Manchester United. The toxicity increased and, in the final reckoning, Fosun are massively at fault for the drop.
