ONE – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 1905…6,000 are at a wet Cappielow in Greenock (are we ever likely to get a dry Greenock day in November?) to see a fine Celtic performance in which Alec Bennett scores twice and Jimmy Quinn and Davie Hamilton hit the others as Celtic beat the home side 4-0.

TWO – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 1944…1944 has not been a great year so far for Celtic, but there seems to be something in John McPhail who scored today (Matt Lynch scored the other) as Celtic beat Third Lanark 2-1. There is a general feeling of anti-climax from those who thought that the war would be over by now, but the Germans keep resisting desperately.

THREE – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 1950…A good performance at the traditionally difficult venue of Broomfield, Airdrie sees a good 4-2 win. Bobby Collins scores twice (one of them with a penalty) and John McPhail and Charlie Tully score the others.

FOUR – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 1961…It is now beginning to look as if Celtic may even be in a position to mount a challenge for the Scottish League after an impressive 3-0 win over Airdrie at Celtic Park. Mike Jackson scores twice and John Hughes once, and the 26,000 crowd (bigger than the average for 1961) leave in rare good humour. Pat Crerand is particularly impressive.

FIVE – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 1989...There is now real trouble at Celtic Park after today’s 0-1 defeat at Tannadice to Dundee United. Celtic have now lost three games in a row, and even at this stage, the season looks over apart from the Scottish Cup in the New Year. Discontent is brewing among the support, but it is difficult for most supporters to turn on Billy McNeill. Yet the challenge to Rangers is feeble.
