Personnel mattersThree centre-backs – Emre Can (cruciate ligament rupture), Ramy Bensebaini (suspended) and Filippo Mane (injured) – were unavailable, so Luca Reggiani (18) returned to the team. He was one of three changes from the match in Cologne (2-1), alongside Jobe Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi. They replaced Bensebaini, Julian Brandt and Serhou Guirassy (both on the bench).

The matchAugsburg sat deep and compact in defence but defended very proactively and looked to move forward quickly and directly after winning the ball. Borussia Dortmund lined up in a 3-3-2-2 formation with Maximilian Beier and Adeyemi up front, and Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha just behind them. In build-up play, wing-backs Julian Ryerson and Daniel Svensson positioned themselves in the front line.

The Black & Yellows took the lead with their first shot on goal as Nico Schlotterbeck drew Svensson out to the left, and he then played the ball straight into the path of Beier. His cross was slightly deflected by Keven Schlotterbeck, but Adeyemi still got to the ball and fired home to make it 1-0 (13) despite pressure from Giannoulis and goalkeeper Dahmen. BVB continued to dominate the game and Augsburg continued to rely on counter-attacks. They created two dangerous chances but were extremely fortunate between the 29th and 35th minutes as Beier (29) and Adeyemi (33) hit the crossbar, while Dahmen almost scored an own goal following a corner (31) before making a flying save to tip Bellingham’s powerful shot over the bar (35).

Beier’s diving header, which skimmed just over the crossbar (44), was already the seventh chance for a dominant BVB side, who had nine shots to three and 61% possession in the first half.

A BVB corner led to a goal for the tenth time this season as Reggiani headed Ryerson’s cross perfectly into the far corner in the 59th minute to make it 2–0. The entire bench ran onto the pitch to celebrate the goalscorer. With a quarter of an hour to go, Svensson had to come off injured after taking a blow to his foot, so Fabio Silva came on and Beier moved into defence.

Seven minutes from time, Adeyemi broke through following a pass from Nmecha but was denied by Dahmen. Shortly afterwards, Beier narrowly missed the target and substitute Guirassy also failed to find a way past Augsburg keeper Dahmen (90+2).

OutlookBVB are at home again this coming weekend, facing Hamburger SV on Saturday (18:30 CET).
