The game between FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid was one that guaranteed victory to only one side. While it seemed like, for much of the game, that it would be La Blaugrana who would end up securing all three points, it was in fact the visitors who managed to do it. Ultimately, the loss in question ended up as a big blow to Barcelona.
With many players underperforming, and even publicly admitting that they are aware of their shortcomings, the result was definitely a consequence of Barça’s lack of finishing. However, there were also those who played exceptionally well and would feel like their efforts went to waste.
Pedri was one such player, and his magical performance was almost enough to veil the cracks and dents of his Barcelona team. However, another midfielder who had a great outing was Gavi, the 20-year-old La Masia talent whose intensity and technical quality was a blessing for Hansi Flick’s team.
However, beyond just his own footballing abilities, it is his fearlessness and leadership in addressing issues verbally that is also a great asset. During the game, as highlighted by SPORT, one such instance developed when Gavi ended up scolding a much senior player in Robert Lewandowski for not giving his all as per the midfielder’s understanding.
Before the half-time whistle, it was clear that Lewandowski’s decision to drop deeper gave Atletico Madrid, and especially Clement Lenglet, more space to carry the ball forward and create issues for Barça. Gavi noticed this relatively early, and was quick to scold Lewandowski for his lack of intensity and making it quite easy for the opposition players to progress the ball.
This issue reportedly bothered Gavi on several more occasions before the half-time whistle was finally blown. Once that happened, the youngster approached the veteran striker over the issue once again and Lewandowski gave his own reasoning as to why he was not aggressively pressing the other team and why it was better in that scenario.
Still, Gavi seemingly remained unamused and even brought the issue up with Pedri. Ultimately, while it may be nothing more than an on-field discussion which is pretty common for any player on any team, the difference in age and stature clearly showcases that Gavi also provides a strong personality and leadership qualities whenever he is available for the team.
