The build-up to the 2026 World Cup has taken an unexpected financial twist. FIFA has decided to cut its operational expenses, slashing more than $100 million from the tournament budget set to unfold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This move comes even as football’s global governing body anticipates record revenues exceeding $11 billion.

These financial adjustments mean savings across several sensitive areas of the organization, including logistics, accessibility, and certain public hospitality measures. According to The Athletic, multiple host cities are already feeling the effects of this cost-cutting policy, with expenses for security, fan zones, and even parking now falling directly on local authorities.

As a result, some municipalities have had to revise their plans and scale back their event-related projects. The anticipated surge in ticket prices is also fueling debate, with some seats for the final rumored to be priced as high as $8,680. Despite these concerns, FIFA insists these adjustments will not compromise safety or organizational quality, with the governing body still planning to deploy nearly 5,000 staff to oversee the tournament.
