Neil Harris is considering a loan exit for Millwall's highly-rated young winger Adam Mayor

Millwall are currently running the rule over the immediate future of Adam Mayor, who could be poised to leave on loan in the January transfer window.

The development comes via Lions boss Neil Harris, who revealed in his pre-Burnley press conference on Thursday morning that Millwall are considering whether to sanction a loan exit for the young wide player.

Mayor made the move to South London in January of this year., joining from League Two side Morecambe in a reported £300,000 deal. First-team opportunities have been difficult to come by for Mayor, who has only played 50 minutes of football in close to a year after making the switch at the start of the year.

Just two of his four appearances have come since Harris' homecoming to the club in February, with Mayor evidently not figuring in the 47-year-old's immediate plans.

The winger has been absent from each of Millwall's opening 12 exchanges in the 2024/25 Championship campaign owing to a hamstring injury sustained back in July, but a return is expected in the not-too-distant future.

Ahead of Millwall's home match against high-flying Burnley this Sunday, Harris spoke to the press and revealed that the 19-year-old attacker could leave The Den on loan in the transfer window.

"I know Adam well from seeing him at Morecambe - I know what kind of player he is and the type of attributes he has got," Harris told the South London Press.

"He came on at Rotherham (last season), made an impact and was involved in the lead up to the goal.

"For a young man, and a wide player with Millwall attributes, he just hasn’t been fortunate with injuries and opportunities at the moment.

"He will certainly be one we look at in January - what is best for him? Is it best for him to be here with us and try and affect the first team? Or is he one that needs to go out, play some football and build his development that way?

"We possibly might see Adam next week but probably more likely to be after the international break."

Although Millwall and Harris evidently haven't arrived at a conclusive decision just yet, securing a loan move away and the regular first-team football which would accompany that surely represents the best immediate option for all parties.

With young starlet Romaine Esse and Duncan Watmore both in fine fettle thus far this season, it's going to be difficult for Mayor to get a look in once he's back from injury.

Having made 67 of his 71 career appearances beneath the second-tier for Morecambe, there's a school of thought that the teenager isn't ready for the Championship just yet, but he does need to be playing football one way or another.

Mayor was flying at Morecambe and his trajectory has just halted ever so slightly since making the move for Millwall, but he still has a promising career in his sights and must be pursuing regular minutes elsewhere to realise that.

You would imagine that League One may well be the most likely destination for Mayor, who scored three goals and set up three for Morecambe at that level during the 2022/23 season.
