5-0 should have been nowhere near enough for Rangers

It is true that Rangers were on hiding to nothing in the cup today – lose and it was the most embarrassing result in the history of the club and win, well that was expected.

The problem was that it was ‘only’ 5-0 which is the same score the B team beat the same side with some weeks ago.

Of course that technically was only a friendly and this was in front of a packed Ibrox but the visitors nearly scored once or twice and Rangers certainly were not at their best.

The fact that at halftime it was only one goal is testament to how bad Rangers are and while it feels unfair to be critical of a 5-0 win the opposition was something below dreadful.

Fraserburgh are Highland League level and by no means dominated this game, but they did hold their own in conceding just one goal in the first half.

There is the distinct feeling that Celtic would’ve put past 20 against this side but some fans noticed some of Rangers players quite frankly looked like they couldn’t be bothered.

Despite those incredible breakthrough 10 days, Ross McCausland simply never pushed on to become a Rangers level player and he fell away badly. Given his chance today he looked distinctly uninterested and as a boyhood Rangers fan didn’t even celebrate his goal.

He was not the only player who lacked effort and determination. Many of his colleagues did as well and that’s half of the reason why Rangers only scored five against opposition of this low level.

Ultimately, we are through to the next round but this match summed up the Philippe Clement regime pretty perfectly.
