Rotherham United have had a bid for one of Fleetwood Town's key players rejected, but it's unlikely to be the only one that they make for him.
Rotherham United have had an ambitious £300,000 bid to lure away Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu rejected, according to reports.
The Millers have a busy summer ahead following a disappointing first season back in League One following relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2023/24, with a change of manager also coming late last saeson too.
The Millers ended the 2024/25 season in 13th place in the League One table, and manager Steve Evans was sacked at the end of March - he was replaced by former first-team coach Matt Hamshaw, who assisted Paul Warne for a number of years.
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Rotherham have made an "ambitious" bid for Fleetwood Town's Brendan Wiredu, who is the skipper of Pete Wild's Cod Army.
Nixon reports that the Millers have had a bid of £300,000 for the centre-back rejected at Highbury, but it is claimed that the transfer offer was an "opening" one, meaning this saga probably hasn't ended as soon as it begun.
Rotherham have seen Player of the Season Hakeem Odoffin depart from their defensive unit this summer after turning down a new deal, and Cameron Humphreys may follow him as he continues to stall - both of which have presumably seen the chase start for Wiredu.
The 25-year-old was courted by Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window, but a move didn't materialise, with FLW exclusively revealing that the ex-Colchester United man had failed a medical with the Latics, causing the move to collapse.
There's been little doubting Brendan Wiredu's importance to Fleetwood Town since he first signed for the club from Colchester United in 2022.
Wiredu was originally a product of the Charlton Athletic academy, but he couldn't secure a place in the first team, and following a spell on loan at Colchester United, he signed for them permanently at the end of the January 2021 transfer window.
He signed a contract extension with Colchester United at the end of the 2020-21 season, but a year later he was on the move again, this time to Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed six-figure fee.
The last three years haven't been especially happy ones for Fleetwood, with their progress stagnating and it culminating with a relegation from League One in 2023-24.
The growth of Wiredu throughout his three years has been one of the few highlights of recent times though. No small part of the appeal of this player to Rotherham will be his versatility. Although a centre-back nowadays and the position he's taken for the last year-and-a-half, he can also play in midfield as he has done over the years.
Rotherham's bid for the player may well attract interest from elsewhere. In the summer of 2024 it was reported that Derby, Oxford and Plymouth were all looking at him, and Wigan of course made their move in January.
That didn't happen, of course, and it may be that Rotherham have stolen a march on any potential rivals by making the first move for him this summer - it seems likely that they'll at least be back with another bid for him.
