A €65m offer is all it will take for Liverpool to sign a generational French star.
Richard Hughes still has his toughest job ahead of him at Anfield, and it’s a big one. You could argue it's the biggest one yet.
Trying to replace Virgil van Dijk.
It's basically impossible when you really think of it.
Fortunately, Van Dijk is still under contract, but when the moment comes when he decides to move on, Liverpool won’t just be losing the best centre-back in the world they’ll be losing the player who’s been the backbone of everything they’ve built in recent years.
Van Dijk isn’t just a good defender. He is an exceptional one. One of the best that has ever been.
It’s the way he reads the game that really stands out. He makes defending look easy, constantly anticipating what attackers are about to do and shutting it down before it even becomes dangerous. There aren’t many defenders in history who’ve been that dominant and that consistent - strikers genuinely hate playing against him.
But what really takes him to another level is his leadership. He’s always organising, talking, and keeping the back line in shape. Everything just feels more solid when he’s there.
You can see it in the players around him too. They look calmer, more confident, and more switched on. It’s no coincidence that younger defenders have developed so well alongside him - Van Dijk just makes everyone better.
He's also a bit of a rarity in the sense that he is a left-sided centre-back. They are a niche market and that makes Van Dijk even more valuable.
Right now there aren't many elite left-sided centre-backs in European football looking to knock on Liverpool's door to replace the Dutchman.
But there is one player on Liverpool's radar, who will be available for less than expected.
According to Florian Pletternberg, RB Leipzig are willing to sell Castello Lukeba this summer, and below his release clause which is €80m.
He claims that an offer as low as €65m will be enough for any prospective team to agree a move and complete a move to sign the exciting French star.
That's a bargain price for the 23-year-old, who comes with a lot of experience and who is an extremely talented left-sided centre-back.
Lukeba is very much on Liverpool's radar. He has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, so it's easy to see why Richard Hughes would absolutely snap his hands off at the opportunity to sign him for a bargain price.
With Ibrahima Konate and Jeremy Jacquet also already at the club, bringing in Lukeba could add yet another French centre-back to the Reds' ranks, and increase the chemistry within the team.
There's also his ability on the ball, Lukeba is so composed and comfortable in possession as a left-sided centre-back. He would be the perfect choice to replace Van Dijk - not just defensively but also in the way he involves himself in the build-up as well.
