Enzo Fernandez came into Chelsea’s team today despite having played for Argentina in the international break, and had the captain’s armband on.

He put in a great performance playing pretty high up. His flick for Nicolas Jackson set up the opener, and he then had the favour repaid as Jackson’s header was saved by Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, with the rebound falling to Enzo to nod home.

His impressive stats from the game were highlighted by “Statman Dave”:

14/21 final third passes completed; 7/9 duels won 5/6 tackles won (most); 5 ball recoveries 3 chances created (most); 3 shots; 1 assist; 1 goal.

He made 3 key passes and played 5 long balls, the most of any outfielder in Blue. He was WhoScored’s player of the match, with an 8.7 rating.

He also assisted Pedro Neto against Arsenal in our last game, and got an impressive 3 against Noah in the Conference League just days before that. He played well for Argentina against Peru and Paraguay over the international break too, picking up an assist against the latter.

Enzo hopefully finding form at the right moment

Given he cost £107m to buy from Benfica, it was always going to be almost impossible for Enzo to live up to his price tag. He still has a long way to go if he wants to come anywhere close to it. We’re not going to pretend all is going well with him just because of one good game.

But as we enter a period of the season with tons of games where he’s going to be called on a lot, it’s great to see him in form and looking good. We’re going to need him, and he’s going to have plenty of chances to prove himself in these crucial weeks to come.
