Tom Bischof is starting his second season with FC Bayern with a great deal of confidence. After an instructive first year with the record champions, the 21-year-old now wants to take the next step in his development—and establish himself permanently in central midfield.
A year ago, Bischof transferred to Munich on a free transfer from TSG Hoffenheim. In his debut season, the U-21 national team player gained valuable experience, won the Bundesliga title, the DFB Cup, and the Super Cup with FC Bayern, and earned himself a spot in the lineup with numerous appearances.
Particularly noteworthy: Coach Vincent Kompany frequently deployed the versatile youngster as a left back. Going forward, however, Bischof is expected to play more often in his natural position in central midfield.
The 21-year-old received another sign of trust when he was assigned the number 8 jersey, which had become available following Leon Goretzka’s departure.
On the club’s website, Bischof revealed how the decision came about: “At first, I waited to see what Aleks Pavlovic would do. He’s been here longer, he’s a good friend of mine, and I think highly of him. I spoke with him and waited to see if he wanted to take the number eight. But Pavlo is sticking with his number, so that’s how I ended up taking the number eight.”

On the field, the captain of the German U21 national team has set clear goals for himself. After settling in, he now wants to prove himself as a permanent fixture in the midfield. “I want to take the next step now,” Bischof emphasized, while also making it clear that he sees the competition in Bayern’s midfield as an opportunity: “In the center, Pavlo, Jo Kimmich, and I push each other to be better. Everyone wants to play; that makes us all better and helps the whole team. I’m definitely confident I can handle this role.”
With Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Bischof, Vincent Kompany has several highly talented options for central midfield. The 21-year-old wants to hold his own in this competition and do his part to ensure that FC Bayern remains in contention for all titles in the new season.:::
