You could see the pain and disappointment of the Manchester City players as their Premier League title hopes evaporated come the final whistle of their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last night. Pep Guardiola’s side had to win last night to keep their hopes of winning the Premier League title alive. They failed to do so, and Arsenal were crowned Premier League champions as City drew with a quality Bournemouth side. Speaking after the match, Erling Haaland urged his team to use the hurt from this season’s failed bid to win the 2025-26 Premier League title as motivation for next season. Haaland is hungry to taste Premier League success once again.
Eli Junior Kroupi opened the scoring for Bournemouth last night in the 39th minute. Andoni Iraola’s side should have put City away by the time Erling Haaland equalized for City in the 95th minute. For a brief moment, it did seem like Haaland’s late goal could have led to an unlikely Manchester City victory. But it wasn’t to be as Pep Guardiola’s side left the Vitality Stadium with a point, which means that Arsenal cannot be caught at the top of the Premier League table, therefore ending City’s 2025-26 title chase.
The pain and disappointment of the City players was clear to see at the final whistle. Several slumped to the floor with exhaustion, as the despair of falling short of their season goal sunk in. Speaking after the match, Erling Haaland urged everyone associated with Manchester City to use the disappointment of not winning the Premier League this season, as motivation for next season. He explained in an interview with mancity.com: “In the end, every game in the Premier League is difficult. We tried. It wasn’t enough. The whole Club should use this as motivation now. We should be angry, we should feel a fire inside our belly because it’s not good enough.”
“It’s gone two years now, it feels like forever. We’re going to do everything we can, everyone that will be here next season, to win the league.”
Erling Haaland is now a leader of this Manchester City side. He spoke like one after his team’s title hopes were dashed following last night’s draw with Bournemouth. It is now up to this City side to learn the lessons of this season and use the pain they felt last night as motivation to go one step further next season.
While Manchester City completed a domestic cup double this season, the disappointment of finishing second to Arsenal for the Premier League title should light a fire under this team. They have had to experience defeat in a title race to learn what is required at the business end of the season. The hope is that, while it is a harsh lesson for Pep Guardiola’s new-look team to learn, it is one that takes them to a new level next season. Time will reveal the answer to that question.
Erling Haaland has urged everyone associated with Manchester City to use the pain and disappointment of last night and falling short in the Premier League title race as motivation for next season. If City can learn the lessons of this season and return with determination to go one better next season, City may be a powerful force for the 2026-27 campaign.
