A loan move to Sheffield Wednesday from Southampton for Shea Charles has been dubbed a move that would benefit all parties after recent reports linked the Northern Irish international with a loan switch to Hillsborough.

It was reported by The Star that the Owls were keen on a move for the 20-year-old, while the Southampton Daily Echo have reported that Charles is set to finalise a loan switch in the near future.

The youngster was signed from Manchester City last summer and played an important role in helping the Saints win promotion back to the Premier League, playing 32 league games, but regular playing time could be at a premium following his side's promotion to the top flight.

Shea Charles will be reunited with younger brother Pierce at Hillsborough and that family connection could well have helped the Owls get a deal over the line.

Our Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Callum Maxted, believes that Charles will be an excellent addition to the Owls' squad and that he offers something that Danny Rohl's side desperately need.

Speaking to Football League World, Callum said: “I think it’s a perfect signing to be honest. He’s someone who could play as an eight or as a six in the midfield positions, and he’s someone who’s grown up playing with the ball at his feet, and that’s the way we want to play.

“We’ve seen with his brother Pierce the ability they’ve got to play football, and that’s what you want really.

“He’s 20 years of age, so he might be a bit raw, but from what I’ve seen of him I like the look of him. “He looks forward when he has the ball and that’s kind of what we need. We need someone who will play the ball forward and want to play, and want to go forward, but he’s also someone who can win the ball back and that’s something that we struggled with playing against Sunderland on Sunday, there was no cover in midfield to win the ball back.

“I think that is a perfect signing that works for everyone and something we can build on. He’s a player that can sit at the base of the midfield or play in Ingelsson’s position and look forward really.”

Signing Shea Charles is a coup for Sheffield Wednesday

Southampton signed Charles for a fee that could rise to as much as £15 million last summer, so the fact that Wednesday are set to sign him on loan a year later suggests it's an excellent piece of business for Rohl's side.

While he may not have been in the starting XI all too regularly, starting just 15 games, he played 32 regular season games, and featured once in the play-offs as his side won promotion.

This shows that he's more than capable of playing regularly for Wednesday, and it speaks volumes of the project that Rohl is building at Hillsborough that Premier League clubs want to loan their talented players to them.

At 20, Charles still has a couple of years before he reaches his full potential, and a move to Hillsborough will allow him to get regular football under his belt to help accelerate his development.

That shows that it's a move that is set to benefit all parties, and Charles is likely to return to Southampton next summer as a better player.
