FC Bayern are once again being linked with one of Europe’s most exciting defensive talents. Ahead of the Bundesliga home game against TSG Hoffenheim, sporting director Max Eberl has now publicly commented on the ongoing speculation surrounding Luka Vušković.
In recent weeks, there have been increasing reports that the German record champions are keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old. Vušković, currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Hamburger SV, is one of the most eye-catching young central defenders in the league and is on the radar of several top clubs.
At the press conference ahead of the Hoffenheim game, however, Eberl first clarified the club’s internal priorities: „First of all, we have to sort out our ‚internal transfers‘ [Vertragsverlängerungen]. Once that is done, we will have a top-class defence.“ At the same time, he made it clear that the Croatian’s quality was beyond question. „That doesn’t mean that Vušković isn’t a good player. He is 18, is playing an outstanding season at HSV and belongs at Tottenham.“

In this context, the Bayern boss also referred to the current personnel situation in defense. „But FC Bayern also has very good central defenders in Jonathan Tah, Upa and Minjae – and we also have Itō and Stani, who can play there,“ explained Eberl, adding: „So we can’t just sign every good player who is recommended to us.“
Recent media reports had painted the picture that Munich are following Vušković’s development closely, but that a concrete move is dependent on sporting conditions. The youngster himself is regarded as a player who expects regular playing time when he takes his next step – a factor that plays a key role given the competitive situation at FC Bayern.
At the end of his comments, Eberl nevertheless found clear praise for the central defender: „He is undoubtedly a very good player. But as I said, we have to sort out the internal transfers first.“
