Carlton Palmer gives his take on the potential transfer of Tommy Waddingham to QPR or Sheffield Wednesday.
Carlton Palmer has tipped Australian teenage sensation Tommy Waddingham as one for the future amid reported interest from Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday.
The 19-year-old is currently catching the eye for Brisbane Roar in the A-League, where he has scored four goals in his opening 11 matches for the Aussie side. This form has seen him catch the eye of multiple English clubs.
However, at such a young age, a move to the other side of the world could be seen as an enormous gamble for Waddingham. But, is it one that the teenager should take as the next logical step in his rapidly moving career?
Football League World spoke to Palmer to get his thoughts on a potential move to England for the young Aussie superstar.
The 59-year-old told us: "I don't think any of these clubs are looking at him to come in and do anything particularly special this season. They're looking at him for the future.
"Depending on how much money they have to pay for him, it could represent a good bit of business.
"It's always a gamble when you take a young player, but he's coming with a lot of plaudits, and a lot of people saying he's got the pedigree to go on and be a top striker.
"It's not a gamble because I don't think any one of these teams are looking for him to come in and make an immediate impact. Depending on the price they pay for him, they're looking at the future.
"I think QPR are in the driving seat, and this might be a worry for Danny Rohl. I worry for Sheffield Wednesday if Rohl's not able to do any business in the January transfer window, and he continues to be successful at Sheffield Wednesday.
"I think he could be leaving the football club if the chairman doesn't back him, but the chairman has backed him thus far."
The forward has been a real standout performer for a Brisbane side that has struggled in the A-League this season. To be shining above the rest of the senior professionals at the club is a real show of pedigree, as Palmer stated.
It would be a life-changing opportunity for Waddingham to play in England at such a young age, as the Championship has always had a reputation for being an incredible breeding ground for young talent.
Depending on the fee that either QPR or Wednesday spend on the attacker, the signing could represent a shrewd piece of business. As mentioned by Palmer, it's unlikely there will be expectations for him to make an impact this season, giving him time to develop rather than being thrown in at the deep end.
Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities for his next club to send him on loan lower down the English pyramid, which would help get him acclimatised to the EFL. All in all, Waddingham could be a real gem for his next club.
