Former Milan defender Ignazio Abate has been sacked by Serie C outfit Ternana again, but is not expected to return this time, despite being fired and rehired within the space of a few hours back in February.
Abate, who made over 300 appearances for Milan before going on to coach the club’s U16 and Primavera sides, took over at Ternana at the beginning of the 2024-25, which was his first job as a head coach at senior level.
Despite being second in Serie C Girone B, Ternana sacked their head coach in February over a reported row regarding the son of the club President, who had been left off the club’s squad list and then saw a loan move fall through.
However, after widespread anger over Abate’s sacking, he was called in for a meeting with the club’s senior leadership team and emerged as the head coach again a few hours later, with an official announcement arriving the following day.
Two months later down the line, Abate has been sacked again, but is not expected to return this time. His final game in charge was a 4-1 loss to Luchesse at the weekend, which has left Ternana five points off the lead of their Serie C table.
Fabio Liverani has been appointed as the successor.
