Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has sparked speculation over a positional shift for Relebohile Mofokeng.
The Bucs wonderkid has featured in the last two fixtures against Magesi FC and AmaZulu, taking up the no.10 role where he made a decisive impact with two goals and an assist.
Mofokeng has slotted seamlessly into the playmaker position, prompting an intriguing debate over whether his talents shine brighter as a winger or as a creative no.10.
Now, the Pirates boss has weighed in, revealing his preference for the 21-year-old Bafana star to operate in a central role rather than out wide.
“I quickly realised he's a player who can excel in that position because of his awareness, his ability to scan the pitch, and his technical skill to turn sharply when receiving the ball. As I mentioned in the previous press conference, the future of football is all about scanning,” Ouaddou explained.
"And when you can make decisions before even receiving the ball – that’s the direction football is heading. It’s the modern game and we’re fortunate to have a player of his calibre in our ranks. So, if he can give you more in that central role, why would a coach restrict him to the flanks?
"Out wide, the touchline limits his options, so you’re capping his abilities. But in the middle, he has 360 degrees to express himself, while on the wing it’s only 180 degrees because of the line."
Meanwhile, Pirates are set to return to action with a Nedbank Cup Round of 32 showdown against third-tier side Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
