Dr Dan Plumley has given his verdict on Wrexham's Championship ambition

Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley expects Wrexham to continue investing in the squad heavily if they can gain promotion to the Championship this season following another expensive outlay this winter.

The Red Dragons are seeking a third promotion in a row, having gone back-to-back from the National League to League One.

Phil Parkinson’s side are in the mix for a top two spot, and will feel secure of at least securing a play-off place, with the January window set to close on Monday evening.

Co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have earned a lot of attention for their investment into the first team squad since taking over in 2021.

This has even included moves made this January, including a deal worth £2 million for Reading's Sam Smith, via Football Insider, as well as the addition of Jay Rodriguez, who, according to Mike McGrath, will be on a package worth £15,000 per week for the League One side.

When asked about the possibility of Wrexham spending in the Championship, Dr Plumley claimed it’s a certainty.

While he acknowledged that the club will have to keep a close eye on the EFL’s financial rules in the Championship, he is sure that heavy investment will continue if promotion is earned.

“Absolutely [they'll invest],” Dr Plumley told Football League World, via Bet ideas.

“From an ownership point of view, we know the situation, and we’ve seen them invest heavily to get to where they are.

“There is no PSR (profit & sustainability rules) below the Championship, so to a degree it doesn’t matter too much in League One and Two.

“If they do manage to achieve promotion, the restrictions do tighten, and they will have to adhere to stricter regulations.

“But the intention is certainly there, and I think they’ll continue to spend if they reach the Championship.”

Wrexham league position

Wrexham are currently third in the League One table, six points adrift of second place Wycombe Wanderers.

A poor run of form in recent weeks has seen them fall behind in the battle for a top two spot, with leaders Birmingham City another two points clear, and with two games in hand.

The Blues are sitting comfortable in top spot, meaning there may just be one other place available for automatic promotion, with Huddersfield Town and Stockport County also in the mix.

Next up for Wrexham is a trip to face Crawley Town on Saturday in a 3pm kick-off.

Wrexham’s ambition has no end in sight

Wrexham’s owners have shown plenty of ambition since taking over the club almost four years ago, and there's been no signs of that slowing down with Smith through the door and Rodriguez to follow.

There is no telling what the limit will be for their long-term aims, although spending their way to the Premier League will be quite tricky.

Compared to National League and League Two sides, the club have quite a significant budget, but they will start to feel some limits once they do make their way to the Championship.
