Wharton is understood to have given his approval to a five-year contract at Liverpool, who are expected to pursue the England international in the summer window.

The claim comes from journalist Nicolo Schira, who says Liverpool are confident a deal will be done.

Any transfer is expected to wait until the summer, while Crystal Palace will demand a huge fee for the 21-year-old. Wharton is valued in excess of £60m at Selhurst Park and is contracted at Palace until 2029.

Liverpool view Wharton as an ideal deep-lying player to add to their midfield group. This season, he ranks in the top 10% of midfielders in the Premier League for tackles, expected assists, recoveries and possession won in the final third.

Wharton could be the next big name to depart Palace, after Marc Guehi moved to Manchester City this month and head coach Oliver Glasner confirmed he will exit in the summer. Leading scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta has also expressed interest in a transfer.

Manchester United and Manchester City had been linked with Wharton, though each are understood to favour Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
