Less than three months before the World Cup, AFA president Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino have been placed under indictment for allegedly withholding large social security contributions. The decision was issued by federal economic crime judge Diego Amarante.
The judge also ordered an asset freeze of 250,000 dollars against both men. La Política Online reports that the pair also face wider corruption accusations, including alleged shell companies and money laundering.
The charges do not currently involve pre-trial detention.
Tapia consolidated his power after winning the 2022 World Cup and retains significant influence within FIFA. One of his main allies has been Leo Messi, who has remained silent since the investigations began.
The report added that Javier Milei’s government had considered moving swiftly against Tapia and even jailing him before the tournament, but any push would be delayed until late in the year.
When the case began, AFA-affiliated clubs backed Tapia by suspending a round of the league programme.
