Zamalek have submitted formal complaint to the Confederation of African Football CAF against the Rwandan refereeing team led by Samuel Uwikunda following the club’s 1-1 draw away to Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Saturday.

The result leaves Zamalek second in Group D with 4 point behind Al Masry while Kaizer Chiefs sit third and Zambia’s ZESCO United remain bottom with no points.

In official statement released after the game, Zamalek said the Board of Directors had decided to escalate the matter due to what they described as major officiating mistakes that “directly affected the final score.”

The club highlighted three key incidents:

A penalty they believe should have been awarded for Angolan forward Chico Banza.A disallowed goal by Tunisian striker Seifeddine Jaziri which Zamalek insisted was “clearly legitimate.”What they viewed as excessive yellow cards shown to Zamalek players throughout the game.

The Cairo club argued these calls harmed the integrity of the contest and cost them valuable points in tight group.

Zamalek call for CAF intervention & urgent VAR implementation

In their complaint Zamalek urged CAF to ensure “proper referee selection” for upcoming rounds to reduce what they described as recurring officiating issues in African competitions.

They also made direct request for CAF to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology starting from matchday 3 warning that the absence of VAR “compromises fairness” in key matches.

“It is time to take decisions that will reform the refereeing system in CAF competitions including the Confederation Cup,” the club said in its closing statement.
