After spectacular turnaround in Mainz: Kane warns urgently against PSG

FC Bayern delivered a real spectacle in Mainz on Saturday – albeit with two completely different faces. After a desolate first half, the Munich side were already 3-0 down at the break before mounting an impressive comeback in the second half to win the game 4-3

It was a comeback that underlined the quality and morale of the German record champions – but also one that could not disguise their serious weaknesses. Harry Kane in particular, who scored the decisive final goal in the 83rd minute, clearly put on the euphoria brakes after the game

The English superstar had clear words for the upcoming Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain: „If we don’t get the counter-pressing right, if we don’t control the counter-attacks well and if we give balls away carelessly – Paris will be even more deadly in such situations,“ the top scorer told BILD

Weak first half ruthlessly exposes problems

Bayern were frighteningly vulnerable, especially in the first half. Without several regular players, coach Vincent Kompany’s team looked disorganized and error-prone. Mainz exploited these weaknesses consistently and repeatedly posed major problems for the Munich defence

Dominik Kohr was completely free to score the first goal, Raphaël Guerreiro lost the ball in a critical area for the second goal and there was also a lack of consistency in tackles for the third goal. Bayern revealed unusual deficits, particularly in their transitional play, which could have a much greater impact against a top opponent

The 0:3 half-time lead for Mainz was the logical consequence of a weak Bayern performance – and a warning signal that Kane deliberately focused on afterwards

Attacking stars turn the game around – but PSG are waiting

However, FCB showed a completely different face after the break. Led by Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise, Munich launched a furious comeback. The attacking trio were instrumental in turning the game around within 45 minutes

Bayern put Mainz under pressure with much more pace, precision and determination and were rewarded with four goals in the end. The individual class of the attacking players in particular made the difference and ensured that a seemingly lost game turned into an away win after all

Despite the spectacular comeback, however, Harry Kane’s message remains unmistakable. Bayern were able to allow themselves to make mistakes against Mainz and correct them in the second half, but a similar performance against Paris Saint-Germain is likely to be punished much more severely

The focus now turns to next Tuesday evening, when they face PSG in the semi-finals of the Premier League. One thing is clear: the German record champions will not be able to afford a performance like the first half in Mainz.
