Boca began their Copa Libertadores tie against Barcelona of Ecuador with a setback as Agustín Marchesín went off in tears with a right knee injury at La Bombonera.
According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the starting goalkeeper tried to carry on but the pain prevented him, and he was replaced by Leandro Brey.
The Argentine had only just returned, making a swift comeback to face Independiente in the last round of the Torneo Apertura, then suffered another blow.
Minutes into matchday two of the group stage, after a Boca attack, he felt significant discomfort in his right knee. Brey began warming up immediately and came on.
The former Gremio man could not hide his tears and was consoled by team-mates as he left the pitch.
Pending medical tests, Boca's No 1 will be one of the side's most significant absences for the Superclásico against River on Sunday 19 April at the Estadio Más Monumental. The club also face a congested month, including their first meeting with Cruzeiro in Brazil.
