Barcelona are about to get Marc-Andre ter Stegen off their books for the second time in six months, with Ajax having agreed to sign the German goalkeeper on loan for the entirety of the 2026-27 season. It will only be some of the 33-year-old’s salary that the Catalans will be able to stop paying temporarily, but it’s still a big help in their bid to continue improving their finances.
It was last week that reports confirmed that an agreement between Ajax and ter Stegen had been reached, but since then, there has been little moves made towards finalising the deal. According to The Athletic, the expectation is that “the deal could still take days to complete, as there are details to sort over personal terms”.
It is unclear exactly what details still need to be sorted, but it could be that an option or obligation to buy is agreed upon. Barcelona would desperately love to permanently part ways with ter Stegen given his high salary, but it is exactly that aspect that has made it impossible for any clubs to even think about a transfer.
Given that ter Stegen is under contract until 2028, Barcelona know that he will return to the club next summer once his time at Ajax is over – providing there is indeed no option or obligation to buy in the loan agreement. Because of this, they will have to go through his situation again one more time, and it may be more difficult given that the Eredivisie giants are only going for a deal this summer due to the personal bet of new head coach Michel Sanchez, who worked with ter Stegen at Girona during the second half of last season.
