Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have been ordered to pay former head coach Jose Riveiro $588 000 (R9.3 million) by the world football governing body, FIFA.

This comes after the Spanish mentor was axed three months into the job following a string of poor results across all competitions, including the FIFA Club World Cup.

Riveiro oversaw seven games in charge of the 12-time African champions, winning one match, drawing four, and losing the other two encounters.

In the wake of FIFA's ruling, Ahly confirmed intentions to challenge the decision through the expensive Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) route.

“Dr. Abdullah Shehata, the legal advisor for the football sector, stated that the club will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the ruling issued by FIFA's Players' Status Chamber in favor of Spaniard Jose Ribeiro, the former head coach of the first football team, awarding him a total compensation of $ 588 000, including the penalty clause stipulated in the contract for three months' suspension,” read the club statement.

"He added that this step will be completed within three weeks at most, after the club receives the details of the decision issued in favor of the Spanish coach. He pointed out that the ruling is not final, and there are other levels of appeal, and it will be appealed according to the procedures followed in this regard.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will succeed in their bid to have the ruling overturned, while Riveiro will undoubtedly be hoping the decision is upheld.
